Massage therapy & Thyroid health

Thyroid gland seems to be one of the most important regulator of our health. Therefore a healthy thyroid benefits our total health. Our responsibility as Massage Therapists is to think and treat holistically. Here is an interesting read for us and our clients. Once again  Massage Therapy is not a tool to fix muscles and joints only. 🙂

“The Secret Life of Fascia”

Many of you who know me, heard me over and over again pointing towards this mysterious link called fascia, or to name the bigger system that contains it,  Connective Tissue System.

Here is a very interesting article that might teas your curiosity. I hope you will enjoy reading and hope it will open a new perspective about your wellness.

BE LIKE WATER

PictureAfter Massage

If your last massage experience was like in this picture you did
great, but as you can see, that happened way too long ago 🙂
Too many people allow year after year passing, and not having such a healthy and beneficial experience because of the misconceptions, lack of information and misleading environment. You on the other hand have the chance to get informed, make your own choices and eventually lead by example!
Be in touch with your Massage Therapist even when you are away…here:

Massage Therapy Contraindications

I need to underline the importance of seriously considering the contraindications for massage therapy.
Numerous times I warned my clients about the risk of delaying the healing process or even aggravating their health if they receive massage when having a cold or a virus. Rarely my clients accepted to leave my clinic and return only when well. Rarely those that received a treatment did not get back to acute stage of a cold or a virus. Sadly one of my clients had to go to ER the next day.
Please inform your therapists ahead of time if you are sick and decide together with them if you should reschedule your treatment. Please accept  that we are also responsible and it is within our scope of practice to make the best judgement in the long run.
Example of conditions that are temporary contraindications for massage therapy:
Bronchitis
Cold
Contact Dermatitis (if widespread)
Diarrhea (if due to infection)
Fever
German Measles
Gout (during acute phase)
Hepatitis
Hives
High Blood Pressure
(unless controlled by medication, diet or exercise)
Influenza (the flu) or other virus
Lice
Lupus (during a flare-up)
Measles
Mononucleosis
(Mono)
Mumps
Pneumonia
Ringworm
Scabies
Tonsillitis

Did you know?

One important benefit of Massage Therapy in Canada is the access that a health care professional has to your skin. In our society, with our rules, norms and laws, one of the most important organs of our body must stay hidden from most assessment. The few health care professionals that have more access to your skin
are the Dermatologists and the Massage Therapists. Your skin is the map of your health.
Your skin temperature, tone, tenderness, texture, color, discoloration, pliability, elasticity, and everything that grows underneath, within or on top of the skin is important from a health perspective.
We are the first ones to ring the alarm bell in case something is not right. Prevention is better than cure. Please be well!

My favorite fittness ~ GYROTONIC

Second Opinion and Alternative Medicine, Your Options

Carpo Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Beware a Specialist’s opinion!
A client with Gestational Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (caused by pregnancy)
for over eight years was told by a “best surgeon” of one of the Toronto’s Hospitals that there is nothing she can do about it. The numbness in her fingers would not allow to feel moisture, cold/warm etc. Her grasp was weak and painful for all these years. Ten minutes of Massage Therapy Treatment returned the sensation in her fingers after more than eight years!

ALWAYS GO FOR SECOND OPINION AND EXPLORE ALTERNATIVES TO WESTERN MEDICINE IF YOU HAVE TO. SOMETIMES ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE OR HOLISTIC APPROACH WILL BE MORE EFFICIENT.

GERIATRIC MASSAGE

Some of us are blessed to have our grandparents or even great grandparents around.
My experience with geriatric massage proves that all of them enjoy the gentle touch, the active listening, and the words of kindness.
They have so many stories filled with wisdom they need to share with us.
I’ve noticed that most of the time, their biggest joy is that they get to tell the story to someone that cares.

The word “geriatric” in medicine, refers to health impairments that are associated with
the later years of life, usually age 65 and older.
Geriatric Massage takes age-related health conditions , including serious illnesses, into account.
However healthy elderly populations also have special considerations such as the thinning of the
skin, increased bruising and others.
Elderly clients sometimes can not usually lie flat on the massage table or turn over easily.
During my college courses, learning to massage with these special needs was part of the curriculum.
In fact I completed hands-on courses during specialty clinics in a nursing home,
where I had to massage elderly, ill or impaired people in their own bed.
Fortunately geriatric clients also can be very healthy and active adults who just want to
use massage to keep them that way.

I am happy to let you know that I am now also offering Geriatric Massage at Silvia Iovanca Stratan RMT.
